John and Bonnie began working in Arop village in Papua New Guinea in 1987. In July 1998, a tsunami destroyed Arop and killed a third of the people who speak the Arop language.

After that tragedy, the Nystroms and the three Arop translators who survived started the Aitape West Translation Project, in which they and their partners coach and train translators from 11 different languages as they translate the Bible into their own languages.

The Nystroms and their partners are pioneering methods for doing Bible translation into multiple languages together. The local translators now help train more translators from some of the 300 languages in PNG that still have no scripture at all.

In their book, Sleeping Coconuts, John and Bonnie share this story of tragedy, teamwork and transformation, and the incredible way that God used a tsunami to change the face of Bible translation in Papua New Guinea.

Wycliffe Ministry Budget

Wycliffe establishes a Ministry Budget for its missionaries to reflect recurring expenses related to family factors and their geographic location of service. Giving to Wycliffe directly impacts missionaries’ ability to begin and remain in their assignment. This monthly budget covers ministry-related expenses, insurance and retirement, social security and taxes, and Wycliffe administrative costs. The remainder is what the missionaries receive as “take-home pay” for their daily living expenses.
